Web Hosting Questions & Answers

How do I update my web site?

You will need a 'webmaster' account and password, to log in to the Content Management System for your web site. Page editing is straight forward, although customers are recommended to only do simple text and picture alterations themselves, to maintain the site styles and chosen page sizes.

How do I log in to my web server?

Nantinet is a web design company, so customers are not expected to manage their own web server or mail accounts. However, you are free to log in and make any changes you wish. Please do not change your password without telling us! If you change your password, we will have to re-set it when we update your web pages.

You log in to your web server at http://www.yourdomain.co.uk/admin

Then enter your username in the user name box, and your password in the password box.

When you log out, you will see a link to full documentation for administering the account.

How can I see a full list of the hosting services available to me?

Just log in to your web server and have a look at the control panel.

How do I set up my email?

Give us a call and we can go through the process with you.
If you need to change your email settings yourself, you should use the following in Outlook (Express):

Choose any Display Name you like
Select 'POP3' as the mail server type
Enter 'mail.yourdomain.co.uk' for incoming mail.
Enter 'mail.yourdomain.co.uk' for outgoing mail, UNLESS YOUR BROADBAND PROVIDER REQUIRES YOU TO USE THEIR SERVICE. If you cannot send mail, this is often the problem.
Enter your User Name in the form username@yourdomain.co.uk
Enter your Password
If you are using the wizard, then finish.
Then select the new mail account, choose 'Properties', choose the 'Servers' tab and check the 'My server requires authentication' box.

Can CMS be added to my site?

CMS (Content Management Systems) allow you to add new pages to your site, change the site layout and add new site modules. CMS must be requested before the site is developed.

What restrictions are there on site use?

If you add content yourself, either through FTP, CMS or a page editor, please don't upload any adult pictures, movies or offensive materials in general. Your site may be blocked if you do this.

Do I have a spam filter?

Yes, this is enabled by default, but it can be disabled if you so request.

How do I transfer an existing domain?

Please contact us for the information you will need. You will always be the owner of the domain, but we will then invoice you when it expires, and set it to work with your account.

How can I upload files myself?

CMS sites allow you to do this. For standard sites, you can do this through the page editor (if you have requested this feature).

For non-editor based pages, you will need to use an FTP program, or web design software like Dreamweaver.
You will need the following information:
User Name in the form of username@yourdomain.co.uk
password
FTP server is ftp.yourdomain.co.uk
Host Directory is mainwebsite_html/

How do I get Frontpage extensions installed on my website?

Frontpage is now deprecated and no longer available.

How do I add subdomains?

Please request this to be enabled. You can then set these up yourself from the control panel, if you wish, or we will do it for you.

Can my friends and colleagues have space on my virtual server?

Yes. You can add users to your account, who can be given their own mail addresses, webspace and FTP access. The users are given the email address, 'user@yourdomain.co.uk' and a URL of 'http://www.yourdomain.co.uk/~user' More information can be found in the documentation, available when you log out.

How do I backup my site?

You can take site backups via the control panel, and each time you log in to the CMS a backup of the site text is always made. This will not include pictures, so if you delete any then restore the site, only picture placeholders will be visible for the deleted images.

What does SSL capability mean?

If you want to have your own private secure server space eg https://www.yourdomain.co.uk, then you will need the additional SSL option. The SSL option would enable you to accept confidential information via your website and gives all parties the confidence that information is being sent securely and to the right place. Please Contact us to discuss this.

As a rough guide, 1GB of data transfer a month is about 20,000 page views a month.

  • Something does not work!
  • Can I assign different users to different pages?
  • How do I change the username / password?
  • How do I use the in-page editor?

The in-page editor module, 'TextEdit' or 'TextEditLite' is based on the widely used FCK Editor script. It works like a simple word processor, but always remember to save changes before leaving the page.

How do I upload pictures and include them in my page?

A: Click the button, and then click 'Browse Server'. To upload a picture, click the Browse button, then click Upload. Finally, click the picture icon to include it in your page. You can set the border, alignment, alt text etc. from the last dialog you see.

My picture was not added to my page.

A: This is because you did not click OK to add it, or you tried to add it at the very top of the page. Make sure you have at least one line of text before any pictures.

How do I add a file, so that it can be downloaded from a link on my page?

A: First, select some text of a picture for the link. Then click the button, and follow the same procedure for uploading a picture (see above).

My link was not added to my page.

A: You probably did not select anything to attach the link to, before creating the link. Always select some text or a picture first.

How do I remove a link?

A: Click the link, then click the button.

How do I delete files from the server?

A: Click the picture or file upload buttons, as if you are going to upload something. Instead of uploading a file, look for the button underneath the file you want to delete. Click this. You can also delete whole folders, but you may need to do this twice - once to delete all the files from the folder, then once to delete the folder itself.

How do I change the formatting of the text?

A: You can change the font from the Font pulldown box, but to change the text style, e.g. to use a heading style,, choose a style from the Style pulldown box. These are the same .css styles used throughout the site. This ensures your site keeps a consistent style. You can also change the text colour and background colour as well from these buttons:

I seem to be stuck with one Style I previously selected.

A: To remove a style, click it again in the Style pulldown box. You will see a tick next to the currently selected style(s).

When I log out, my changes are discarded.

A Always click the Update button before you log out. This stores the new page in the site database. If you log out without Updating first, your last changes are not saved. Always log out when you have finished.

The file upload progress bar does not always work - why?

A: The file upload progress bar is buggy, so please ignore this.

I have uploaded alot of files. Is this a problem?

A: File uploads will occupy server disk space, so remember to delete any unwanted files. If you exceed your disk quota, your site will be temporarily disabled.

Can I import a Word document?

A: MS Word data can be pasted directly into the editor, but it may look different to the original Word document. Edit it as required.

I've made alot of changes, and now my page does not look right. How can I clean it up?

A: You can edit HTML directly, and this is useful to remove unused HTML tags, or if your page does not seem to edit correctly. Click the 'Source' button to toggle WYSIWIG / HTML view.

How do I back up my page(s)?

A: The easiest way is to click Source, select all the text, press CTRL and C together (this will copy the text to the clipboard). Then paste this into Notepad, Word, Wordpad or a text editor of your choice. To restore, click Source and delete everything. Then copy the saved text (CTRL - C), click in the source window and press CTRL and V to paste the text in. ALWAYS WORK IN THE SOURCE WINDOW - if you copy or paste in the main window, you will lose all your formatting!

    The editor seems unresponsive sometimes.

A The editor will timeout after a few minutes of inactivity - this is a security precaution, although you will still be logged in. If the editor seems to stop working, this is the reason. Log out and log in again.

Can I use the editor in Firefox?

A: Yes, but there are some problems with Firefox javascript - the editor may not always work, or may only work for a while. Also, Firefox is slower than Internet Explorer when using the editor. Internet Explorer is recommended for in-page editing, although Firefox is a better browser generally.

    Something does not work!

A: This editor is continually under development. Please be patient!

Can I assign different users to different pages?

A: Each page can have a different user, or multiple users, if required. Please request this feature.

How do I change the username / password?

A: The password is encoded, and if you need it or your username changed, please request this.
